Chair Update: JoAnn Baeten Co-Chair

JoAnn updated the group about the progress with VAN-Voter Access Network and prompts will be developed to help canvass, in a variety of ways, for local candidates. Be in thought for Derek and his family, as his nieces and their mom lost their home in the recent tornado that went through our area.

New Business:

A motion was made by Karen Breton to look into making business cards for members to carry to give to potential members that have interest in attending meetings. She reported that, while collecting petition signatures, several people have been unaware that Baxter County has a Democrat Committee. 2nd by Mary O’Shields and Tracy Tilley.

Discussion:

History and Education:  Mike Breton

Mike provided us with some trivia. He has some projects in the works, telling the stories of democrats that have had beneficial impacts in the area and made Baxter county a better place to live.

Legislative Watch:

Glenda updated the group regarding the petition signatures. She reported that the Women’s Healthcare petition has 600+ signatures, which is about three-quarters of the to the goal. The education amendment petition has 500+ signatures, which is about two-thirds of the way to the goal. There are three more weeks to collect signatures. They must be turned into the secretary of the state by July 15th.

Local Beat:

Donnie reported that both Quorum court and City council meetings have been quiet. City council has voted to become part of the chamber of commerce regional board, but the Quorum court did not. JoAnn reported no new changes at the school board meetings, but the conversations about funding and school improvements continue to be discussed. No new election information was reported by Bob Bodenhamer.

Announcements:

Reminder-No meeting in July. The meeting falls on the 4th of July weekend. Plan to gather back in August.

Karen Breton reported that the Campaign funds committee will meet before the August meeting to decide on funds to allocate to local running candidates. See Karen if you would like to be involved.

Decency 2024 signs are officially for sale. They can go up in the county, but there are restrictions within city limits (60 days before election). See Karen for purchase.
