April’s Local Beat

April’s local beat is much different than the one from March, rather than updates from the city council, or the quorum court, the community’s focus has been on the millage for the Mountain Home School District. At the same time there is an election for school board members going on that has been overshadowed by the millage.

Candidates Scott Bryant, Stewart Rogers, and Scott Booth are all running for the Mountain Home school board. We heard from Scott Bryant and Scott Booth at our meeting in April. I have not heard from Mr. Rogers. Both Mr. Rogers and Mr. Bryant are openly in support of the millage. Mr. Booth favors a new building but won’t say whether he opposes or supports the millage as written.

Tensions have risen as Lousiana/Mississippi transplant Chris Chamberlain has recently rallied the Ozark Patriots to vote him in as the chair of the Republican Party. He also leads the movement against the millage. Previous records uncovered by local news channels have unearthed some strong claims against Mr. Chamberlain.

The opposition has put the school district in their crosshairs and developed a reputation of spreading misinformation through repeated exaggerations and/or leaving out key details. A common tactic is to purposefully misunderstand things in order to create doubt among the public. The group supporting the millage is known as A+ For Education, a bi-partisan group that consists of locals who see the big picture.

Many local Democrats have shown up for the school district by supporting our friends across the aisle to support our schools this election. Election day is only a few days from now on May 9th. The A+ for Education team has set up the following website to find accurate information about this election.

A public forum was held by KTLO. I took the liberty of transcribing the millage forum and adding subtitles. I cut away the intros and outros to just get to the questions.

We will see what May brings. My advice is everyone needs to spend a little more time in the garden and a little less time on social media this month.

Regards,
Derek Huber - Chair of the Baxter County Democratic Party
